Toronto & Ontario Commercial Jingles

In honour of the Super Bowl, and specifically the unnecessary madness that ensues over the commercials, I’ve decided to publish a little something I’ve had in mind of posting for a while…

Every city has its own companies and businesses, which usually results in several jingles and commercials that are somewhat exclusive to that surrounding area. And as you’ll eventually see (and hear) below, Toronto is a perfect example of this. And if you were brought up watching television or listening to the radio in Toronto, you’d be surprised to realize just how many of these jingles have become so ingrained in your memory…. Jerusalem 2111: Whoa…

I came across a video the other day that really captivated me. It wasn’t because of what message it was trying to deliver, but rather I was taken back by the thrilling drama in a very unlikely and unfamiliar setting. And than… before I could say whoa, the climax/twist had me thinking “What?!”

Turns out the video was one of many entries for Jerusalem 2111, an international animation competition, which took place from July 2010 until the end of the calendar year. This above video took home third place. How I never came across any of these videos is a complete shock to me.

Cabbie On The Street leaving The Score – a big loss for sports fans

Playing with Mike Green's hair: Typical Cabbie interaction with the athletes

I was saddened this week to hear that Cabral “Cabbie” Richards will be leaving The Score (a 24-hour sports channel in Canada) after nearly a decade of service. He was one of my favourite interviewers and he will be sorely missed.

Richards was known for his popular “Cabbie On The Street” segments where he got real up and close with athletes and fans, posing unusual questions, which usually resulted in unusually entertaining responses. Continue reading “Cabbie On The Street leaving The Score – a big loss for sports fans”

Vancouver 2010 Olympics: Thoughts on the games before they become irrelevant

https://i2.wp.com/committedindians.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2010_winter_olympics_logo1.pngIt seems only fitting that I miss the most important hockey game likely to be played in my lifetime.
Why? Because I don’t want to be an addicted sports junkie anymore.

Yeah that’s a pretty bold statement, but I’ll more on that in another post coming soon. But as a short preview, let’s say I’d like to calm the Vancouver 2010 Olympics my “bittersweet swan song” and my “farewell to being a sports addict”.

But this post is about the Olympics.

The US Airways flight tephillin scare – why it’s a really great story

This has to be one of the most interesting stories I’ve seen in a while. And while at first I was dumbfounded by the events that made national headlines out of a 17 year-old Jewish boy’s decision to pray on an airplane. But after doing some more research more news stories about the case, there’s a lot more we can learn and smile about in the aftermath of this “misunderstanding.”

Watching Twitter when Facebook goes down

So I’m on Facebook at around 5:30 last Thursday (Dec 10) afternoon (5:21 to be exact – you’ll see why later), when all of a sudden the server goes down and nothing is responding.

Most of the time it’s just a computer problem, but I’m at school and the Internet usually runs smoothly (unlike at home, where using a certain phone kills the connection… of all the technology, they can’t avoid that problem…sigh)

Trying to figure out what’s up, I log on to Twitter and see if there’s an answer. Why not? That’s where everyone seems to find out everything right away, including Michael Jackson… I have an account and I don’t use it often, partially because I’m too drawn to Facebook and to me Twitter still has that loserish stigma of people posting stupid moments like “I just flushed the toilet!”

At about 5:23, I type in “facebook” into the search engine and see who’s included the word in their tweets. I’m surprised to see only two tweets, only one of them about what’s wrong with facebook.

20 seconds later a notification pops up on the screen telling me there have been “25 new tweets since I started searching.” I click the link and now it gets fun.

What’s wrong with facebook?

Ahhh! facebook isnt working = end of world

no facebook ugh

Why isn’t facebook working????

#Facebook is down for the count.

Another 20 seconds later comes another notification tells me of 100 new posts since I began the search. Which means more comedy.

facebook moving slow. time to get on omgpop.com

Twitter’s dead and Facebook is slow as Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year 🙂

Facebook Is Totally Down

stupid evil facebook! its gone downhill in my opinion.

Another 20 seconds pass, another 100+ posts. And repeat the cycle… (inhale, read, laugh, exhale, new notification…)

I love how people migrate to Twitter now over everything. It’s kind of like that engagement post I did not too long ago, except to larger scale and about not so important things (i.e. facebook going down).

Too me it’s just comedy, but it is interesting to see the trends of people resorting to another social networking site when another one goes down.

Here’s my tweet @ 5:24:

it’s funny when i check twitter when facebook is down… now there’s a tidal wave of tweets coming in

I would’ve posted the screenshots at the time but work came first at the time…

Nuff’ said.

Loser List #8- Fundamentalist Orthodox Christians in Moldova

Allow me to present to you my newest favourite video to hate on:

What we have here is a blatant example of antisemitism. In public. And where are all the people trying to stop this disgusting display? No police? Continue reading “Loser List #8- Fundamentalist Orthodox Christians in Moldova”

Rappers sample Jewish boys choir track

I can’t decide whether to dub this awesome or an strange disaster. At first I thought it was the Miami Boys Choir but after a little background check, I discovered the sampled track was from the The New York School of Jewish Song Vol.2, an album that was released back in the seventies. Permission to sample and copyright issues aside, I wonder if the rappers have an idea what the lyrics are to that track… The words are from Eishes Chayil, a prayer said every Friday night in honour of a righteous Jewish women.

Loser List #7 – York University Faculty

-2009-01-09-pics-04aIt’s been a while since I’ve done one of these kind of posts, and I guess it’s only appropriate that our first post comes just after the beginning of the Fall semester school year. To any Jewish York University student, it’s not just a return to lectures and classes, it’s also a return to events and issues such as the following: Continue reading “Loser List #7 – York University Faculty”
