Loser List #18: Hasidic newspaper cuts out Hillary Clinton & Audrey Tomason from “Situation Room” picture

So I know there’s a thing called “modesty,” but this is just ridiculous. Sure it may be a standard practice as noted in the report below (which is something for the sake of modesty I am totally in favour of), but no one in their right mind can believe that there’s any rational reason under the guise of modesty necessary to completely remove the two women from the photo. Purim: A Parade of Parody

We all know about Purim spiels, shticks, and other forms of fun and ridiculous spectacle that help contribute to the joyous atmosphere of holiday, and so it shouldn’t really be a coincidence that a large amount of parodic material is popping up all over the place online.

Combining the modern trends of over-publicity as well as the numerous ways of creating and getting out there pretty much whatever you want, along with the overbearing attitude of giddiness and mischief that captures the Jewish spirit during the Purim holiday season, several videos and other forms of parody have hit the airwaves in great levels at this time of year.

And on a side-note, another reason we see a lot more videos out there is because maybe… just maybe… observant Jews are finally realizing that we don’t always have to take everything we do so seriously. And that it’s okay to laugh and make fun of the some the absurd things we do. If this is the case, then all the reason more to love Purim.

While there are several videos out there, I’m only gonna focus on a few videos that have very recently gone viral. Except for this one. You already know whyContinue reading “Purim: A Parade of Parody”

Maccabeats new Purim Song video: The Lame Remains the Same

Back in December, I talked about the Maccabeats, the Yeshiva University  cappella group and their video “Candlelight,” which brought in over 4.7 million hits on You Tube. Although extremely catchy, I honestly can’t stand that song. Even worse, I couldn’t even go on Facebook anymore without being bombarded with the overkill of linking to the video. In the end however, I decided to take the high road and compliment the group for capitalizing on the weak taste of today’s society for the sake of their own popularity as well as in finding a way to publicize a better understanding of the holiday via song.

I concluded by saying that “I look forward to their next big hit about how “they tried to kill us, failed, so we feast” celebration.”

But after watching the group’s newest song and video entitled “Purim Song,” I would  like to take that back that previous statement… Because I never wanna look forward to something that lame ever again. Continue reading “Maccabeats new Purim Song video: The Lame Remains the Same”

Two years later: Shua Finkelstein Z”L

[shua.jpg]
Shua Finkelstein
On this date two years ago, a young man named Shua Finkelstein, 20, from Lakewood, NJ  was found dead from an overdose of pain killers. Shua and I went to the same yeshiva in Israel in 2007. Although I’d spent the previous year there, I returned for six weeks and it was during that time I met Shua, who was in the middle of his year at the yeshiva.

Although I barely knew him and didn’t really get a chance to get to know him, when the news came to me that he had died, I felt like I had lost a member of the family.

And while I’m honestly ignorant in regards to what troubled Shua in life, I would like to share something he wrote shortly before he died. He wanted it to be shared with the public, and so I hope I can honour his memory by fulfilling this wish. Continue reading “Two years later: Shua Finkelstein Z”L”

Frum Satire inspires me

So I usually don’t toot the horn of any one particular site or cause (partially because I dislike advertising in general), but when something hits me, no… when it dropkicks me and gives me a jackknife power-bomb and still shakes my hand after the fight, I take notice… and thus feel compelled to talk about it/publicize it here.

One of my favourite blogs – Frum Satire was absolutely on fire this past week, dishing out quality posts one after the other like the cholent pot had caught fire! (the blogger- Heshy Fried, actually works as a chef… so maybe there’s a greater connection between the kitchen and the computer screen then we even know…) Continue reading “Frum Satire inspires me”

10 Posts From 2010 Worth Remembering

When I look back on 2010, dear G-d I hope I can find some kind of solace and strength from a year I honestly want to forget and move on from… But if I can’t, I can always look back on some of these ditties that came about via this blog. Here are some of my top/favourite posts from this past calendar year: Continue reading “10 Posts From 2010 Worth Remembering”

Wig maker “Georgie” speaks out regarding People’s Court case; supporting Heidi and Mendy

A good friend of mine posted this video on my Facebook wall regarding the Frummies sue for damaged wig on The People’s Court story I posted last week. The video features “Georgie” -the wig maker who sold the wig to Heidi (the co-plaintiff in the case) – who gives her side of the side regarding this whole People’s Court case.

The video was originally posted on Dov Bear, a popular Jewish blog, while the actual interview was conducted by Rabbi Yair Hoffman of Vos Iz Neias, an Orthodox Jewish news website. Both sources are contained as links which can be viewed by clicking on the above site names.

Without summarizing every little detail, here’s what the video tells us in a nutshell (According to Dov Bear):

– A woman who identifies herself as Georgie, ie., Heidi’s wigmaker, confirms that Heidi brought her a ruined wig. She also says the ruined wig was, indeed, a custom $3000 wig that was originally created by Georgie.

– The woman also says she made a new wig for Heidi and this was the wig that Heidi wore to court.

Personally, I’ve got nothing left to say about “Sheitlegate”; my brain is still really fried from my birthday party two nights ago (or maybe it’s just stam fried… oh well, so much for making a kiddush hashem ;P )

Argue amongst yourselves, (preferably in the comment section) if you please…

Loser List #16: Frummies sue for damaged wig on The People’s Court

It pains me to post this, because I’m torn between whether or not I should laugh at this or shake my head in utter disappointment at the ridiculousness of this absurdity. I’ll choose both:  Oy veh…

In a nutshell, it’s all a big understanding really – a result of two people from different ethnicities playing a crazy game of broken telephone. But I gotta to criticize both sides here. Continue reading “Loser List #16: Frummies sue for damaged wig on The People’s Court”
