Two years later: Shua Finkelstein Z”L

Shua Finkelstein
On this date two years ago, a young man named Shua Finkelstein, 20, from Lakewood, NJ  was found dead from an overdose of pain killers. Shua and I went to the same yeshiva in Israel in 2007. Although I’d spent the previous year there, I returned for six weeks and it was during that time I met Shua, who was in the middle of his year at the yeshiva.

Although I barely knew him and didn’t really get a chance to get to know him, when the news came to me that he had died, I felt like I had lost a member of the family.

And while I’m honestly ignorant in regards to what troubled Shua in life, I would like to share something he wrote shortly before he died. He wanted it to be shared with the public, and so I hope I can honour his memory by fulfilling this wish. Continue reading “Two years later: Shua Finkelstein Z”L”

Frum Satire inspires me

So I usually don’t toot the horn of any one particular site or cause (partially because I dislike advertising in general), but when something hits me, no… when it dropkicks me and gives me a jackknife power-bomb and still shakes my hand after the fight, I take notice… and thus feel compelled to talk about it/publicize it here.

One of my favourite blogs – Frum Satire was absolutely on fire this past week, dishing out quality posts one after the other like the cholent pot had caught fire! (the blogger- Heshy Fried, actually works as a chef… so maybe there’s a greater connection between the kitchen and the computer screen then we even know…) Continue reading “Frum Satire inspires me”

On the fence: Bar’chu! (I’m A Jew) – Parody of Cee-Lo Green’s “Forget You”

Another ditty of a Jewish parody of a popular song is making its rounds of viral fame, and this time it’s Cee-Lo’s Green‘s “Forget You” (or should I say F**k You) becoming “Bar’chu! (I’m A Jew):

So at first I was just gonna make fun of video, I kinda liked it. But just kinda… Continue reading “On the fence: Bar’chu! (I’m A Jew) – Parody of Cee-Lo Green’s “Forget You””

3 Things You Never Say To Someone With Depression

Yesterday marked the beginning of a new initiative by Bell Canada, entitled ‘Let’s Talk’, which aspires to spread awareness, information, but most importantly mass discussion and communication about mental health.

The first day of the campaign, February 9,  was pronounced “Let’s Talk Day, ” where Bell donated 5 cents for every text or long distance call made by its customers to support mental health related programs in Canada.

In addition to the donations, many celebrities, including Canadian Olympian Clara Hughes took part in the campaign.

And while the day has passed, the talking has only begun (hence why it’s called an initiative). And as an individual who has personally dealt with depression (having been diagnosed with it last year), it is only fit that I do my best to play a role in publicizing the message of the campaign. The White Stripes breakup and popular music discovers it has cancer

The White StripesHearing the news that one of your favourite sources of artistic and cultural entertainment will cease to exist is a tough pill to swallow, regardless of how much time and effort you put into appreciating the product being put out there. Though nothing compares to the death of an actual person, the death of an artistic & cultural entity can have a great impact one’s life – particularly in the way that one spends their time & money.

But for me personally, of all the arts  and culture that can come and go, nothing seems to inspire the types of emotions like the way a musical group or band does.  And while the finale of a certain television show, a movie series, the end of a series of novels, or even the destruction of famous landmark can bring out a plethora of emotions within a person – it’s music that does it for me, above all others.

So when I found out that The White Stripes were breaking up (as was announced on their website on February 2, 2010), needless to say I was crushed. Continue reading “The White Stripes breakup and popular music discovers it has cancer”

Toronto & Ontario Commercial Jingles

In honour of the Super Bowl, and specifically the unnecessary madness that ensues over the commercials, I’ve decided to publish a little something I’ve had in mind of posting for a while…

Every city has its own companies and businesses, which usually results in several jingles and commercials that are somewhat exclusive to that surrounding area. And as you’ll eventually see (and hear) below, Toronto is a perfect example of this. And if you were brought up watching television or listening to the radio in Toronto, you’d be surprised to realize just how many of these jingles have become so ingrained in your memory….
